　　 　　裙子是当今许多女子极其钟爱的服装，就裙子的功用来说，古代的裙子和现在的裙子有不小的差别。 　　在古代，女子穿裙子主要是为了讲究礼节，而不是为了展示自身的妩媚和俏丽。中国古代对于女子的言谈举止以及装束都有着极其严格的要求。 　　明朝李渔在《闲情偶寄》中写道：“妇人之异于男子，全在下体。男子生而愿为之有室，其所以为室者，只有几希之间，掩藏秘器，爱护家珍，全在罗裙几幅。” 　　古人对于女子的下体有着强烈的神秘感和神圣感，并强调女子以裙子遮掩下体，否则，就会被认为是轻薄和无耻。 　　不论是年老的还是年轻的女子，只要结婚成家，就要经常规规矩矩地穿着整齐的裙子，即使在家里也要如此。如果客人来访，遇到主妇没有穿裙子，就会被认为是对客人的不敬和失礼，传扬出去会遭到耻笑和白眼。 　　女子在家里一般都穿黑颜色的裙子，其样式以褶裥裙为多。当时，对于裙幅的数量也很有讲究，裙幅初为六幅，即所谓“裙拖六幅湘江水”；后用八幅，腰间有很多细褶，行动辄如水纹。 　　到了明末，裙子的装饰日益讲究，裙幅也增至十幅，腰间的褶裥越来越密，每褶都有一种颜色，微风吹来，色如月华，故称“月华裙”。月华裙是一种色彩缤纷的裙子，仿佛月华一般动人心弦，而且高雅鲜丽，深受当时女子的青睐。 　　到了清末，有一种约定俗成的规矩，女子不能随意穿红裙子。民国时期的作家包天笑在他的《衣食住行的百年变迁》一文中说： 　　“红裙子要夫妇双全才可以穿。若是一个孀妇，不许穿红裙，而且永远不许穿红裙的。如果应穿礼服的时候，青年少妇可以改穿别种颜色的裙子，浅碧淡青，各随所好，但总觉得不快于心；老年人已是儿孙绕膝了，可以改穿黄色的裙，而且直到死，终不能穿红裙；还有夫妇之间，惟正室可以穿红裙，姨太太不许穿红裙，即使是她的儿子已是科甲发达做了大官，不许穿就是不许穿。” 　　当时，为了女子能否穿红裙子，出现了无数嫡庶之争的家庭纠纷。后来，一些思想进步的文化人提倡妇女解放，女子们不再裹脚，旗袍也迅速流行开来，女子们穿裙子也有了选择的自由。
